Supporting Local Portland Town Football Club

Posted by: Stonefirms    Tags:      Posted date:  March 26, 2012

Portland town football club (PFTC) was formed in 2007 by brothers Paul and Andy barber. Originally called Galaxy FC they began life as a five a side outfit playing on a Thursday evening.

The continued support from Portland Stone Firms Limited and a grant from the DCFA have meant PTFC has once again been able to create even more teams for the new 12/13 season with a total of 10 teams next season. 5 adult and 5 youth totaling more than 200 Portland registered player’s coaches and managers.

The Watery Lane site now known as the Ricol leisure arena and to-date has nearly £5,000 invested in it. A new changing block and drive -way courtesy of Portland Stone Firms have been just a few of the improvements taken place.

Future success of the club is looking bright with a possible new development planned for 2013/14 with 3 additional pitches and a target of 500 young Island members.

Portland town FC founder Andy barber would just like to thank everyone who’s ever been a part of the club and for all the help they’ve given to make it what it is today.

History of the Club

PFTC’s numbers began to increase as more players signed up for the club, eventually entering the Weymouth Sunday football league (WSFL) for the 2008/09 season with a squad of nearly 30 players. In that season they became the first Sunday league club in 40 years, the entire history of the league, to be awarded charter standard. Recognition from the FA to clubs who are run in a professional way according to strict FA guidelines.

The club continued to grow and the following season they became founder members of the Dorset football league as well as continuing with the WSFL. With two adult teams they now had over 50 players registered. Success continued on and off the pitch with a second successive promotion earned during that 2009/10 season. In 2010/11 they expanded again with a second Saturday side as well as the Sunday one. With now over 100 local players signed on. This proved to be yet again a massive season in terms of on field success with both the Saturday sides gaining promotion from their respective divisions.

The current 2011/12 season saw Galaxy take that extra step with the inception of a youth academy, which proved to be an incredible success. An under 7′s and under 16′s were formed and numbers have increased so much yet again that the forthcoming season will see the under 7′s become two under 8 Teams.

The growth of the club was at a danger of been halted however due to the lack of facilities on the island, with just the Grove Corner to play from any more growth including the new youth academy needed some where new to call home. This is where Portland Stone Firms Ltd came in and helped secure the continued growth of the club. The offer of the pitch at Watery Lane was a timely boost and a life line for the club. With the support completed the new academy was set up.

The continued support from Portland Stone Firms Limited and a grant from the DCFA have meant PTFC has once again been able to create even more teams for the new 2012/13 season with a total of 10 teams next season. 5 adult and 5 youth totaling more than 200 Portland registered player’s coaches and managers.
