Portland Stone Steps & Staircases

Portland stone steps are ideal for both external and internal use. With a marble-like appearance Portland stone is highly unique and easily carved, an advantage when fitting the stone.The surface does not become slippery when wet, making it ideal for external steps.

In a large number of buildings over the last century many spiral or ramped and twist Portland stone staircases were installed. We have provided many large private residence with bespoke Portland staircases as well as a variety of portico’s.

At the design level a key issue with staircases is the location of the handrail support standards. The staircases themselves can have sunk carved panels or complicated geometric forms, exuding elegance and craftsmanship which are complimented by the stone’s aesthetics.

Alternatively bespoke landings stones, treads and risers can be ordered.

The raw stone is cut to order and masoned skillfully into the style chosen. Typically this consists of rounded bullnose, plain sawn edges to angled chamfer styles.
