Stone Firms Ltd dates back to before The Bath & Portland Stone Firms Ltd was originally registered as a public company on 27th December 1897. It was an amalgamation of a considerable number of smaller trading companies, dating from supplying stonework for St. Paul’s Cathedral. Hence it has been operating out of the same factories on Portland for over 100 years.
We have had various owners since that time and as many names. The last of which was Hanson Bath and Portland Stone, part of Hanson PLC. The Portland side of the business was separated from the Bath side in 2004 and became Stone Firms Ltd once more.
Investment for the Future
Since then the Portland Stone factories and quarries have had considerable investment in excess of £2.5 million. This was spent on new machinery and modernisation, making us one of the most efficient and modern stone masonry works in England.
Computerised equipment and highly skilled operatives allow us to achieve high quality work meeting the industries ever-increasing standards and specifications.
Over the years we have supplied more finished Portland Limestone into London than any other company from the 680 acre estate.

Neil Fuller
General Manager
Neil controls the operational side of the business. He has ultimate responsibility for the Factory and Quarry, and deals directly with customers on all major projects. Neil is a Stonemason by trade and understands all aspects of the business having started as an apprentice Stonemason nearly 30 years ago.

Steve Hansford
Factory Manager
Steve joined the Company in 2001 and is a vital element in keeping projects to schedule. Dealing directly with customers regarding delivery and production issues, he draws on over 28 years within the stone industry to meet demand schedules.

Kevin Bush
Primary Sawing Unit Foreman
Kevin has spent 20 years in the industry working various machines and is a third generation stone operative. He is responsible for the new Upper Factory Primary and Secondary Unit containing over eight programmable saws.
Another commitment is block selection and quality control from the earliest stage.
Andrew Jackson
Quarry Manager
Andy is responsible for the day to day running of the quarry, which is split into the dimension stone and aggregates. He deals directly with customers regarding delivery and production issues, and will organise quarry visits for potential clients to give confidence in our ability to perform. Andy has over 25 years experience in Portland quarries.

Tim Clotworthy
Estate Manager – BSc MRICS
Tim has a degree in Mineral Estate Management and is a Chartered Mineral Surveyor with over 22 years post qualification experience in the minerals industry throughout the South West of England.
He controls all aspects of estate management, planning and environment, acquisitions and land sales.
